“Cat and Mouse” Ostraca at the Brooklyn Museum.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

This is an ostracon (or ostraca), which is pretty much a sketch on a limestone fragment. Instead of using papyrus \ud80c\udd53\ud80c\udf51\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfdb(which was expensive) to practice drawing, the ancient Egyptian \ud80c\udd8e\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udc00\ud80c\udc50 artists or scribes \ud80c\udfdf\ud80c\udc00 would use pieces of limestone. It is dated to the 19th-20th Dynasties, aka the Ramesside Period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s funny about this is it shows the mouse being served or attended to by the cat \ud80c\udd53\ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udce0. The cat \ud80c\udd53\ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udce0 is presenting the mouse with a goose as an offering \ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udeb5 while also fanning him. It\u2019s almost like an opposite because the cat \ud80c\udd53\ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udce0 is usually the predator while the mouse is the prey. This could have been some type of satire on the elite during the Ramesside period, or a visual representation of a fable that is now lost.
