For some context, the unification of Egypt\u00a0\ud80c\udd8e\ud80c\udd53\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude96\u00a0took place c.\u00a03,100 B.C.E., and this period was known as the Early Dynastic Period.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ancientegyptblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/DA82A037-DBE9-4E6B-AB20-DFBD1357C9B9.jpg?w=580&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1344\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Egypt&nbsp;\ud80c\udd8e\ud80c\udd53\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude96, especially during this time period, the distinction between art and writing&nbsp;\ud80c\udfdf\ud80c\udfdb\ud80c\udfe5&nbsp;was almost interchangeable &#8211; so much so that sometimes it is hard to tell if images \ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfe6 are hieroglyphs&nbsp;\ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udf03\ud80c\udfea, drawings or even both!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This Offering Vessel is a combination of two \ud80c\udffb hieroglyphic symbols&nbsp;\ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udf03\ud80c\udfea: the ankh \ud80c\udef9 and the ka \ud80c\udc93. So, let\u2019s read some hieroglyphs \ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udf03\ud80c\udfea!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u201cAnkh,\u201d is a triliteral phonogram that has the sound \u201c\u02c1n\u1e2b\u201d which would sound like \u201cankh.\u201d Although it can be an ideogram for \u201csandal strap\u201d and \u201cmirror,\u201d the&nbsp;\u201csandal strap&nbsp;\ud80c\udef9\u201d is much more commonly seen as the word for \u201cLife.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u201ctwo arms \ud80c\udc93\u201d symbol is a biliteral phonogram that represents the sound \u201ck3,\u201d which would be pronounced like \u201cka.\u201d This is the symbol for the word \u201csoul.\u201d The ka&nbsp;\ud80c\udc93 was the soul or life force of a person.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So how do life&nbsp;\ud80c\udef9, soul \ud80c\udc93 and this Offering Vessel all connect to each other? Together&nbsp;\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\ude97, the life \ud80c\udef9 and soul \ud80c\udc93 form an essential relationship between the living \ud80c\udef9\ud80c\ude16\ud80d\udc0d and the dead&nbsp;\ud80c\udd53\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udff1. Even if the person is dead, the ka \ud80c\udc93 still requires nourishment in the form of food \ud80c\uddec\ud80c\udc01\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udfd4\ud80c\udfe5 and drink. This Offering Vessel allows the ka \ud80c\udc93 to receive water \ud80c\ude17, so it can continue to live on.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Essentially, the vessel allows for the ka \ud80c\udc93 to continue to receive offerings&nbsp;\ud80c\udeb5\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udeaa\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfd4\ud80c\udfe6&nbsp;so it can continue to be sustained! It\u2019s always amazing to me how Egyptian funerary beliefs didn\u2019t really change over time, they just continued to evolve, for example, into False Doors and Offering Tables&nbsp;\ud80c\udc9d\ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\udd61\ud80c\udd3f\ud80c\udec3\ud80c\udfea!&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is a \u201cHieroglyphic Offering Vessel\u201d that is dated to c. 3,000 B.C.E.!
