{"id":1828,"date":"2022-12-11T11:01:06","date_gmt":"2022-12-11T11:01:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ancientegyptblog.com\/?p=1828"},"modified":"2022-12-11T11:01:09","modified_gmt":"2022-12-11T11:01:09","slug":"reading-hieroglyphs-stela-of-irethoreru","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientegyptblog.com\/?p=1828","title":{"rendered":"Reading Hieroglyphs &#8211; Stela of Irethoreru"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Let\u2019s read some hieroglyphs \ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udf03\ud80c\udfea!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today \ud80c\udfc7\ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3 we are going to look at a stela \ud80c\udf97\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udd93\ud80c\ude78 for a man \ud80c\ude83\ud80c\udc00\ud80c\udfe4 named Irethoreru and it is dated to the 25th Dynasty (Third Intermediate Period, c. 775-663 B.C.E.). <a href=\"https:\/\/ancientegyptblog.com\/?p=812\">I have posted about the full stela \ud80c\udf97\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udd93\ud80c\ude78 in the past<\/a>, but today \ud80c\udfc7\ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3 we are going to take a closer look at some of the inscriptions \ud80c\udfdf\ud80c\udfdb\ud80c\udfe5 on it! I like to highlight the titles\/epithets associated with Gods \ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udeb9 and Goddesses \ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udfcf, because they are inscriptions \ud80c\udfdf\ud80c\udfdb\ud80c\udfe5 that you can easily recognize a lot!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s read some hieroglyphs \ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udf03\ud80c\udfea! We are starting right underneath the solar disc!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"580\" height=\"646\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ancientegyptblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/7E1316B3-6E2F-4C68-82F5-18E9D9CF6A93-920x1024.jpeg?resize=580%2C646&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1830\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ancientegyptblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/7E1316B3-6E2F-4C68-82F5-18E9D9CF6A93.jpeg?resize=920%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 920w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ancientegyptblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/7E1316B3-6E2F-4C68-82F5-18E9D9CF6A93.jpeg?resize=270%2C300&amp;ssl=1 270w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ancientegyptblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/7E1316B3-6E2F-4C68-82F5-18E9D9CF6A93.jpeg?resize=768%2C854&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ancientegyptblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/7E1316B3-6E2F-4C68-82F5-18E9D9CF6A93.jpeg?w=1164&amp;ssl=1 1164w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud80c\udc79\ud80c\udea8\ud80c\udc2d &#8211; Osiris<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud80c\ude7c\ud80c\udeb9 &#8211; Great God (this is actually written backwards and should be \u201c\ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\ude7c\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud80c\udf9f &#8211; Lord<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud80c\uddef &#8211; Sky<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud80c\udefe &#8211; Ruler<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud80c\udd96 &#8211; Eternity<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All \ud80c\udf9f together \ud80c\ude16\ud80c\ude97, this reads: \u201cOsiris, the Great God, Lord of the Sky, Ruler of Eternity.\u201d \u201cLord of the Sky \ud80c\udf9f\ud80c\uddef\u201d is usually Amun\u2019s \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfe0\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\udc2d title, so it\u2019s interesting to see it associated with Osiris \ud80c\udc79\ud80c\udea8\ud80c\udc2d here! Also, \u201c\ud80c\uddef\u201d can mean the word \u201cabove,\u201d as \u201csky\u201d is more commonly written as \u201c\ud80c\udeaa\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\uddef.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s the next inscription:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud80c\udea8\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udd87 &#8211; Isis<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud80c\udd68\ud80c\udc8b &#8211; Great One<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udd50 &#8211; God\u2019s Mother\/Goddess<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All \ud80c\udf9f together \ud80c\ude16\ud80c\ude97, this reads: \u201cIsis, the Great One, the God\u2019s Mother.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next to each Uraeus \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udc9d\ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udd97, the name \ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\ude16 of the city \u201cBehdet \ud80c\udd11\ud80c\udca7\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude96\u201d (modern day Edfu) is written. Behdet \ud80c\udd11\ud80c\udca7\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude96 is an Egyptian city \ud80c\ude96\ud80c\udffa in Upper Egypt \ud80c\uddd3.
