{"id":1891,"date":"2022-12-22T10:51:53","date_gmt":"2022-12-22T10:51:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ancientegyptblog.com\/?p=1891"},"modified":"2023-01-29T11:18:11","modified_gmt":"2023-01-29T11:18:11","slug":"cartouches-of-akhenaten-and-nefertiti","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientegyptblog.com\/?p=1891","title":{"rendered":"Cartouches of Akhenaten and Nefertiti"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>While this may just seem like the broken fragment of a statue \ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udc3e (and I guess it is), I love this piece at the MET because it contains the cartouches of Akhenaten \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udd5c\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\ude16 and Nefertiti \ud80c\udd24\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\uddcd\ud80c\udf58\ud80c\udffb\ud80c\udc57!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Amarna Period, and the reign \ud80c\udefe\ud80c\ude0e\ud80c\udfcf of Akhenaten \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udd5c\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\ude16 and Nefertiti \ud80c\udd24\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\uddcd\ud80c\udf58\ud80c\udc57 has always fascinated me, ever since I was a child \ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\uddcc\ud80c\udc14. Let\u2019s start at the right column, since the directional symbols point that way!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud80c\udda5 &#8211; King of Upper and Lower Egypt<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud80c\udef9 &#8211; Life<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud80d\udc1d &#8211; On<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud80c\udc67 &#8211; Maat<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud80c\udf9f\ud80c\uddff\ud80c\uddff &#8211; Lord of the Two Lands<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\udda3\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udfe6\ud80c\udf21\ud80c\ude16- Neferkheperura-waenre which means &#8220;Beautiful are the Forms\/Manifestations of Re, the Unique one of Re&#8221; (Akhenaten\u2019s throne name)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud80c\udfd9\ud80c\udef9 &#8211; Given Life<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now on to the left column! This first part is cut off, but it\u2019s probably a variant Nefertiti\u2019s title of \u201cKing\u2019s Great Wife, as you can see the ending of the word \u201c great \ud80c\udd69\ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\udfcf\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud80c\ude18\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udd91 &#8211; His Beloved<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\uddcd\ud80c\udf58\ud80c\udffb\ud80c\udc57 &#8211; Nefertiti (Neferneferuaten Nefertiti)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud80c\udef9\ud80c\udfcf &#8211; May She Live\/The Living<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud80c\udd96 &#8211; Everlasting\/Eternal\/Eternity<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud80c\udf9b\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udf9b &#8211; Eternity<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What always gets me is Akhenaten\u2019s throne name of \ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\udda3\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udfe6\ud80c\udf21\ud80c\ude16- Neferkheperura-waenre. This particular spelling of the throne name is only seen after he changed his given name from Amenhotep IV \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfe0\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\udeb5\ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udefe\ud80c\udf00 to Akhenaten \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udd5c\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\ude16. The original spelling, before the name \ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\ude16 change was \u201c\ud80c\udc5c\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\udda3\ud80c\udfe6\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udf21\ud80c\ude16.\u201d The name \ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\ude16 is still pronounced the same and has the same meaning, but the falcon glyph \ud80c\udc5c was changed to just the sun disc \ud80c\uddf3 (both pronounced Re\/Ra).\u00a0 Also, all of Akhenaten\u2019s \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udd5c\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\ude16 other names (Horus name, etc) underwent a change, to remove the other deities \ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udeb9, but this one didn\u2019t.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I wonder why Akhenaten \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udd5c\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\ude16 didn\u2019t change the throne name (\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\udda3\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udfe6\ud80c\udf21\ud80c\ude16) to represent the Aten \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3, just like how all of his other names \ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\udfe6 were changed.\u00a0 Nefertiti\u2019s name also underwent a change; her name \ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\ude16 went from just Nefertiti \ud80c\udd24\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\uddcd\ud80c\udf58\ud80c\udc57 to Neferneferuaten Nefertiti \ud80c\udd24\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\uddcd\ud80c\udf58\ud80c\udffb\ud80c\udc57 around year 5 of Akhenaten\u2019s \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udd5e\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\ude16 reign. Year 5 in the reign \ud80c\udefe\ud80c\ude0e\ud80c\udfcf of Akhenaten \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udd5e\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\ude16 is significant, because that is when we see most of the changes to Atenism begin to take place.
