{"id":2025,"date":"2023-01-26T21:55:44","date_gmt":"2023-01-26T21:55:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ancientegyptblog.com\/?p=2025"},"modified":"2023-01-28T11:03:56","modified_gmt":"2023-01-28T11:03:56","slug":"the-throne-name-of-pharaoh-hatshepsut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientegyptblog.com\/?p=2025","title":{"rendered":"The Throne Name of Pharaoh Hatshepsut"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Let\u2019s read some hieroglyphs \ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udf03\ud80c\udfea!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today \ud80c\udfc7\ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3 we are going to look at the throne name (also called the prenomen) cartouche \ud80c\udf77 of my favorite pharaoh \ud80c\ude50\ud80c\ude7b, and one of the first \ud80c\udfc3 \u201cphrases\u201d that I learned how to read when I was first learning hieroglyphs \ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udf03\ud80c\udfea! The pharaohs \ud80c\ude50\ud80c\ude7b\ud80c\udfe6 always distinguished their names in hieroglyphs \ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udf03\ud80c\udfea by wrapping them in a cartouche \ud80c\udf77, which is an oval shape with a straight line closing the oval at one end. The oval shape was meant to protect \ud80c\udd53\ud80c\udc9d\ud80c\udfa1\ud80c\udc1c the pharaoh \ud80c\ude50\ud80c\ude7b and their name \ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\ude16 from evil \ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udd68 in both life \ud80c\udef9 and death \ud80c\udd53\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udff1.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the three \ud80c\udffc symbol cartouche, especially when Re \ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udffa is involved, the name \ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\ude16 read middle-right-left. So why is Re \ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udffa written first but said last!? Honorific transposition! The single symbol alone (like in cartouches) would be pronounced like \u201cra\u201d or \u201cre.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201c\ud80c\udc66 goddess with a feather\u201d symbol is used commonly as a determinative in the name \ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\ude16 for the goddess \ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udfcf Maat \ud80d\udc19\ud80c\udf34\ud80c\udca3\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udc66, but is also commonly used as an ideogram for the word \u201cmaat.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201c\ud80c\udc93 two arms\u201d symbol is a biliteral phonogram for the sound \u201cka,\u201d and also functions as an ideogram for the same. The word \u201cka\u201d has been translated into our modern languages as \u201csoul,\u201d since the person\u2019s ka \ud80c\udc93 was the part of the person that interacted with others and was considered one part of a person\u2019s soul.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This cartouche \ud80c\udf77\/inscription \ud80c\udf98\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udf96 is from the Stela of Hatshepsut, which is at the Vatican Museum.
