This piece is a scribal palette \ud80c\udfe0\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\ude54\ud80c\udd93\ud80c\udfde which we\u2019re used by scribes \ud80c\udfdf\ud80c\udc00\ud80c\udfea! Scribes \ud80c\udfdf\ud80c\udc00\ud80c\udfea held an important place in ancient Egyptian society because they were the few that were literate! While scribes \ud80c\udfdf\ud80c\udc00\ud80c\udfea are famous for their work in tombs \ud80c\uddcb\ud80d\udc2b\ud80c\ude83\ud80c\ude50\ud80c\udfea and temples \ud80c\ude5f\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude50\ud80c\udfea they had other exciting responsibilities as well &#8211; such as recording taxes. In some cases, the palettes \ud80c\udfe0\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\ude54\ud80c\udca7\ud80c\udfde\ud80c\udfea were made of ivory \ud80c\udf4b\ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udf1f. At one end, there were indented circles to hold the black \ud80c\udd8e\ud80c\udd53 and red \ud80c\udca7\ud80c\ude19\ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\udd5f ink that the scribes \ud80c\udfdf\ud80c\udc00\ud80c\udfea used to write, and the other end had a place for them to hold the reeds \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\uddcb\/sticks that they used to write with! The jars that you see in the picture \ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udfcf are water jars \ud80c\udf9b\ud80c\udfbf\ud80c\udef4\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfcc\ud80c\udfe6 that the scribes \ud80c\udfdf\ud80c\udc00\ud80c\udfea used to use to clean off their reeds \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\uddcb while switching between inks while writing!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While this particular scribal palette is \ud80c\udfe0\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\ude54\ud80c\udd93\ud80c\udfde dated to the Second Intermediate Period &#8211; New Kingdom (c. 1635\u20131458 B.C.E), there are also examples at the MET from the Middle Kingdom that look extremely similar to this one! Through time, the style of the scribal palette \ud80c\udfe0\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\ude54\ud80c\udd93\ud80c\udfde hasn\u2019t changed at all!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two \ud80c\udffb ways to write \u201cscribal palette\u201d in hieroglyphs \ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udf03\ud80c\udfea: \ud80c\udfe0\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\ude54\ud80c\udd93\ud80c\udfde and \ud80c\udfe0\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\ude54\ud80c\udca7\ud80c\udfde! Both would have sounds like \u201cmnhD\u201d since both \u201c\ud80c\udd93\u201d and \u201c\ud80c\udca7\u201d are phonograms with a hard \u201cd\u201d sound like in the name \u201cDjoser.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There were also many different types of scribes \ud80c\udfdf\ud80c\udc00\ud80c\udfea in ancient Egypt \ud80c\udd8e\ud80c\udd53\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude96, and their roles were usually designated by titles written on funerary objects \ud80c\ude0e\ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\udef4\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udead such as stelae \ud80c\udf97\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udd93\ud80c\ude78\ud80c\udfe6!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud80c\udfde &#8211; Scribe<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud80c\udfdf\ud80c\udc00 &#8211; Scribe<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud80c\uddd3\ud80c\udfde &#8211; King\u2019s Scribe \/ Royal Scribe \/ King\u2019s Secretary<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud80c\udfde\ud80d\udc0e\ud80c\udfdb &#8211; Scribe of Accounts&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud80c\udfde\ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\ude57\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude50 &#8211; Scribe of the Temple<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud80c\udfde\ud80c\udf98\ud80c\udf9b\ud80c\udff2\ud80c\udfcb\ud80c\udfeb &#8211; Scribe of the Offering Table<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud80c\udfde\ud80c\ude52 &#8211; Scribe of the Treasury<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>School supplies in ancient Egypt \ud80c\udd8e\ud80c\udd53\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude96 definitely look a little bit different than what my students and I use every day \ud80c\udf9f\ud80c\uddf3!
