This piece at the Brooklyn Museum is so beautiful \ud80c\udd24\ud80c\udd91\ud80c\udc8b because even though it is just a fragment, the colors are so striking and I just love looking at it! It is a uniliteral phonogram sign, which means it has the sound of a single consonant. The \u201c\ud80c\udd71\u201d is representative of the sound \u201cw\u201d or \u201cu.\u201d This symbol is also an ideogram for the word \u201cchick \ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udffa.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cripple of water \ud80c\ude16\u201d is also a uniliteral phonogram! The \u201c\ud80c\ude16\u201d is associated with the sound of \u201cn!\u201d The \u201c\ud80c\ude16\u201d has many grammatical functions on its own, and it can mean \u201cto,\u201d \u201cof,\u201d \u201cfor,\u201d \u201cwe\/us\/our,\u201d \u201cin,\u201d \u201cbecause,\u201d \u201cthrough,\u201d and some others! How do we know which word it is? Context clues! In the case of this inscription, too much is missing for us to know what the word is!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201ctall loaf of bread \ud80c\udfd1\u201d symbol is an ideogram for \u201cbread \ud80c\udfd1,\u201d which usually appears in offering formulas. Surprisingly, it can also be used as an ideogram for \u201cThoth\u201d as well!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201chobble for cattle \ud80c\udf82\u201d symbol is a biliteral phonogram which means it is associated with the sound of two consonants.
