My Nonno always spoke very highly of the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology at UCL in London. As a kid \ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\uddcc\ud80c\udc15, he would always tell me that they had \u201cdrawers and drawers full of ushabtis\u201d and it just sounded so cool to me! I wanted to visit so badly!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we got to visit the museum together \ud80c\ude16\ud80c\ude97, it was like a dream come true! It was VERY COOL to be able to open the drawers in the cabinets and be greeted by ushabtis \ud80c\udd71\ud80c\ude19\ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfed\ud80c\udc3e\ud80c\udfea! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We spent hours at the museum going through everything and I spent the most time with the ushabtis \ud80c\uddb7\ud80c\udd3f\ud80c\udf6f\ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfee\ud80c\udc3e\ud80c\udfea (no surprise there)!!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Petrie Museum has quite the collection of ushabtis \ud80c\udd71\ud80c\ude19\ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfed\ud80c\udc3e\ud80c\udfea and they are representative of a lot of the differing styles of ushabti \ud80c\udd71\ud80c\ude19\ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfed\ud80c\udc3e through different time periods in Egyptian history. Most of the photos are representative of more \u201cclassical\u201d ushabtis \ud80c\udd71\ud80c\ude19\ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfed\ud80c\udc3e\ud80c\udfea from the 20th Dynasty forward (made of faience \ud80c\udee3\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udff8\ud80c\udffc, stone \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\udeaa or terracotta \ud80c\udeaa\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\udef4\ud80c\ude07), while the picture below shows the \u201cstick ushabtis.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stick ushabtis \ud80c\uddb7\ud80c\udd3f\ud80c\udf6f\ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfee\ud80c\udc3e\ud80c\udfea (17th to the beginning of the 18th Dynasty) are made of wood  \ud80c\uddb1\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udffa, have a roughly mummiform shape, no artistic details, and have an inscription \ud80c\udfdf\ud80c\udfdb\ud80c\udfe5 on the front.  The function of these stick ushabtis \ud80c\uddb7\ud80c\udd3f\ud80c\udf6f\ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfee\ud80c\udc3e\ud80c\udfea also seems to be different than that of the regular ushabtis \ud80c\udd71\ud80c\ude19\ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfed\ud80c\udc3e\ud80c\udfea that are found in tombs \ud80c\uddcb\ud80d\udc2b\ud80c\ude83\ud80c\ude50\ud80c\udfe6 whose function was to perform tasks for the deceased \ud80c\udd53\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udff1 in the afterlife \ud80c\uddfc\ud80c\udd3f\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude50. The stick ushabtis \ud80c\uddb7\ud80c\udd3f\ud80c\udf6f\ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfee\ud80c\udc3e\ud80c\udfea have only been found in Thebes \ud80c\udf00\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude96, in the above ground chapels that were found near tombs \ud80c\uddcb\ud80d\udc2b\ud80c\ude83\ud80c\ude50\ud80c\udfe6, not inside the tomb \ud80c\uddcb\ud80d\udc2b\ud80c\ude83\ud80c\ude50! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The stick ushabtis \ud80c\uddb7\ud80c\udd3f\ud80c\udf6f\ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfee\ud80c\udc3e\ud80c\udfea most likely represented the family members of the deceased \ud80c\udd53\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udff1, and were placed in the above ground chapel as a way to symbolize family members being close to their dead \ud80c\udd53\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udff1 loved one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
