This is the sarcophagus \ud80c\udf9f\ud80c\udef9\ud80c\ude16\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\udead of a man \ud80c\ude83\ud80c\udc00\ud80c\udfe4 named \ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\ude16 Harkhebit who lived during Dynasty 26 (c. 595-526 B.C.E.). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harkhebit was the \u201cRoyal Seal Bearer, Sole Companion, Chief Priest of the Shrines of Upper and Lower Egypt, and Overseer of the Cabinet.\u201d The sarcophagus \ud80c\udf9f\ud80c\udef9\ud80c\ude16\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\udead was found in his tomb \ud80c\uddcb\ud80d\udc2b\ud80c\ude83\ud80c\ude50, which was a shaft tomb near Djoser\u2019s \ud80c\udca6 pyramid \ud80c\udf4b\ud80c\udd53\ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\ude74 complex at Saqqara (ancient Memphis \ud80c\udfe0\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\udd91\ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\ude74\ud80c\ude96). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This sarcophagus \ud80c\udf9f\ud80c\udef9\ud80c\ude16\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\udead is striking not just from an artistic point of view, but its massive size is also breathtaking! Other large and plump sarcophagi \ud80c\udf9f\ud80c\udef9\ud80c\ude16\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\udead\ud80c\udfe6 have been found in the Memphis \ud80c\udfe0\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\udd91\ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\ude74\ud80c\ude96 area that are similar in style to this one! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sunken relief hieroglyphs \ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udf03\ud80c\udfea on the sarcophagus \ud80c\udf9f\ud80c\udef9\ud80c\ude16\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\udead are inscriptions \ud80c\udfdf\ud80c\udfdb\ud80c\udfe5 from The Book of the Dead \ud80c\ude50\ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udcbb\ud80c\udd53\ud80c\ude54\ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\udff2\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udffa\ud80c\udf7c\ud80c\udffa. Many different deities \ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udeb9 such as Anubis \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\udeaa\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udce3, Isis \ud80c\udea8\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udc65, Nephthys \ud80c\ude60\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udd87, and the Four Sons of Horus (Duamutef \ud80c\uddfc\ud80c\udd50\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udd91, Imseti \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udd53\ud80c\ude83\ud80c\udf7f, Hapi \ud80c\udf9b\ud80d\udc11\ud80c\udeaa\ud80c\uddcc and Qebehsenuef \ud80c\udfc1\ud80c\udf22\ud80c\udf22\ud80c\udf22\ud80c\udd91) all appear. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here is a picture of Anubis’ \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\udeaa\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udce3 name \ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\ude16 as it appears on the sarcophagus \ud80c\udf9f\ud80c\udef9\ud80c\ude16\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\udead! This is one of the variants of Anubis’ \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\udeaa\ud80c\udce3 name \ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\ude16, as it is missing the “\ud80c\udd71” hieroglyph \ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udf03!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This sarcophagus \ud80c\udf9f\ud80c\udef9\ud80c\ude16\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\udead is considered to be mummiform, meaning it looks like a mummy \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udc79\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udc3e! The \u201cmummy\u201d is wearing a wig \ud80c\udd3f\ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udc78 and a false beard \ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\ude83\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udc78. I also love the large broad collar \ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udef4\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\udfba\ud80c\udedd that is on the sarcophagus \ud80c\udf9f\ud80c\udef9\ud80c\ude16\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\udead! If you look closely, you can see two \ud80c\udffb falcons \ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfa1\ud80c\udd44\ud80c\udfea on either end of it! Between the wig \ud80c\udd3f\ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udc78, false beard \ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\ude83\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udc78, and broad collar \ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udef4\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\udfba\ud80c\udedd, Harkhebit is dressed for the best in the afterlife \ud80c\uddfc\ud80c\udd3f\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude50! <\/p>\n\n\n\n
