This quartzite statue \ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udc3e at the Brooklyn Museum is called \u201cAmun-Ra \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfe0\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udffa or Pharaoh \ud80c\ude50\ud80c\ude7b Amenhotep III \ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udc67\ud80c\udfa0\u201d and while small \ud80c\ude16\ud80c\udd93\ud80c\udef4\ud80c\udd69, it certainly gives us a lot to think about! I think that this statue \ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udc3e is a representation of Amenhotep III \ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udc67\ud80c\udfa0 for a couple of reasons!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first and most obvious reason are the hieroglyphs \ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udf03\ud80c\udfea on his chest ornament, which is on top of an elaborately carved broad collar \ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udef4\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\udfba\ud80c\udedd. While the hieroglyphs \ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udf03\ud80c\udfea are difficult to see in the picture \ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udfcf, here is the translation: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udc67\ud80c\udfa0 – Nebmaatra (Amenhotep III\u2019s throne name)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfe0\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udffa – Amun-Ra<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud80c\udf38 – Beloved<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So the full translation would be \u201cNebmaatra, Beloved of Amun-Ra.\u201d This clearly labels the statue \ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udc3e as being of Amenhotep III \ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udc67\ud80c\udfa0. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statue \ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udc3e does have a some similarities to the representation of the god \ud80c\udeb9 Amun-Ra \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfe0\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udffa too, especially the remnants of the crown on his head, which is the same two-plume crown \ud80c\udedb that is characteristic of Amun-Ra \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfe0\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udffa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amenhotep III \ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udc67\ud80c\udfa0 seems to have had a fascination with Amun-Ra \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfe0\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udffa, and probably wanted to be depicted as him. Many Egyptologists wonder if Amenhotep III\u2019s \ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udc67\ud80c\udfa0 fascination with this solar deity was inspiration for his son \ud80c\udd6d Akhenaten\u2019s \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udd5c\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\ude16 religious revolution. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
