Today \ud80c\udfc7\ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3 we are going to be looking at the birth name cartouche \ud80c\udfe0\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\ude19\ud80c\udf77 of the pharaoh \ud80c\ude50\ud80c\ude7b Akhenaten \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udd5c\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\ude16!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, calling this his \u201cbirth name\u201d cartouche \ud80c\udfe0\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\ude19\ud80c\udf77 is a little misleading because Akhenaten\u2019s \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udd5c\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\ude16 birth name wasn\u2019t actually \u201cAkhenaten!\u201d The name \ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\ude16 that Akhenaten \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udd5c\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\ude16 was given when he was born was Amenhotep \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfe0\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\udeb5\ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udefe\ud80c\udf00, and since he was the fourth pharaoh \ud80c\ude50\ud80c\ude7b with that name \ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\ude16, Egyptologists have called him \u201cAmenhotep IV \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfe0\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\udeb5\ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udefe\ud80c\udf00.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why did Akhenaten \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udd5c\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\ude16 change his name \ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\ude16 from Amenhotep \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfe0\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\udeb5\ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udefe\ud80c\udf00 to Akhenaten \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udd5c\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\ude16 during year five \ud80c\udffe of his reign? The change in name \ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\ude16 reflects the religious revolution that was happening at the time. Akhenaten \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udd5c\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\ude16 is famous for disrupting the entire Egyptian religious tradition and changing it from a polytheistic worship of the traditional pantheon to a monotheistic worship of the Aten \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s break down the meaning of Akhenaten\u2019s name \ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\ude16! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So all together, the name \u201cAkhenaten\u201d translates to \u201cSpirit of the Aten.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the greatest things about reading cartouches \ud80c\udfe0\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\ude19\ud80c\udf77\ud80c\udfea is that practicing with them will allow you to begin to understand hieroglyphs \ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udf03\ud80c\udfea much more easily! The names of the pharaohs \ud80c\ude50\ud80c\ude7b contain many common symbols, words, and phrases in Middle Egyptian!
