Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Champollion was just a teenager in September 1822 when he began to decipher hieroglyphs \ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udf03\ud80c\udfea based off of the Rosetta Stone!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Rosetta Stone is actually a decree issued by priests \ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udf5b\ud80c\udfea in 196 B.C.E. that affirmed the cult of Ptolemy V \ud80c\udeaa\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udf6f\ud80c\udced\ud80d\udc1d\ud80c\uddcc\ud80c\udef4. Identical decrees were supposed to be placed in every temple \ud80c\ude5f\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude50 in Egypt \ud80c\udd8e\ud80c\udd53\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude96!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the Christian period in Egypt \ud80c\udd8e\ud80c\udd53\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude96, the use of hieroglyphs \ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udf03\ud80c\udfea began to wane and finally disappeared at the beginning of the 4th Century. The Rosetta Stone contains three \ud80c\udffc languages \ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\udfe6: Hieroglyphs \ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udf03\ud80c\udfea, Greek and Demotic. Since Greek was a known language \ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\udffa, scholars began to try to use the Greek section of the Rosetta Stone to translate the portion in hieroglyphs \ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udf03\ud80c\udfea. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thomas Young was the first person to show that the name \ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\ude16 in the cartouche (\ud80c\udeaa\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udf6f\ud80c\udced\ud80d\udc1d\ud80c\uddcc\ud80c\udef4) actually spelled out \u201cPtolemy,\u201d however, Champollion gets the credit for deciphering hieroglyphs \ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udf03\ud80c\udfea because he showed that the phonetic symbols were also used for Egyptian \ud80c\udd8e\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udc00\ud80c\udc50 names \ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\udfe6 and not just foreign names \ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\udfe6. With his extensive knowledge of Coptic, Champollion was able to begin reading the hieroglyphs \ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udf03\ud80c\udfea more fully!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am thankful for the early works of scholars like Champollion because I would not be reading hieroglyphs \ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udf03\ud80c\udfea without it! The work that these people did to further the understanding of the Egyptian language, and thus the civilization as a whole is nothing short of incredible! <\/p>\n\n\n\n
