While there are not many of this type of ushabti \ud80c\udd71\ud80c\ude19\ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfed\ud80c\udc3e, there are similar (yet more elaborate) ones at the Museo Egizio in Torino, the Louvre in Paris and the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">There is actually no information about this piece on the MET website, but based on the piece and what I know about ushabtis \ud80c\udd71\ud80c\ude19\ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfed\ud80c\udc3e, I am going to make some inferences here!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">I am going to infer that this piece is dated to the 18th Dynasty for two reasons: the first is that the similar ushabtis \ud80c\udd71\ud80c\ude19\ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfed\ud80c\udc3e located in other museums are all dated to the 18th Dynasty (New Kingdom) and the second is that this piece is in a gallery at the MET that contains New Kingdom era pieces!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"580\" height=\"773\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ancientegyptblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/IMG_3245.jpeg?resize=580%2C773&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Ushabti on a Bier\" class=\"wp-image-3184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ancientegyptblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/IMG_3245.jpeg?resize=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ancientegyptblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/IMG_3245.jpeg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ancientegyptblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/IMG_3245.jpeg?resize=1152%2C1536&amp;ssl=1 1152w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ancientegyptblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/IMG_3245.jpeg?resize=1536%2C2048&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ancientegyptblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/IMG_3245.jpeg?resize=1200%2C1600&amp;ssl=1 1200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ancientegyptblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/IMG_3245.jpeg?w=1636&amp;ssl=1 1636w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The &#8220;Ushabti on a Bier&#8221; on display at the MET. This piece is shown amongst other artifacts dated to the 18th Dynasty!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This piece also seems to be made of limestone \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\ude19\ud80c\udf09, and was part of a non-royal but still wealthy person\u2019s burial.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This \u201cUshabti on a Bier\u201d that is pictured plus the ones in other museums don\u2019t contain any hieroglyphs \ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udf03\ud80c\udfea on them which is interesting because many ushabtis \ud80c\udd71\ud80c\ude19\ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfed\ud80c\udc3e do contain hieroglyphic inscriptions \ud80c\udfdf\ud80c\udfdb\ud80c\udfe5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">To me, the \u201cUshabti on a Bier\u201d figures look like the wooden mummy \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udc79\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udc3e figures that would be placed on the wooden \ud80c\uddb1\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udffa model boats \ud80c\udca7\ud80c\udeaa\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude9e\ud80c\udfe5 that went in tombs \ud80c\uddcb\ud80d\udc2b\ud80c\ude83\ud80c\ude50\ud80c\udfea during the Middle Kingdom.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">These types of ushabti \ud80c\udd71\ud80c\ude19\ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfed\ud80c\udc3e figures leave me with more questions than answers which to me is both fascinating and frustrating!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">What was the purpose of these unique type of ushabti \ud80c\udd71\ud80c\ude19\ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfed\ud80c\udc3e figures?\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Why do all instances of these ushabtis not contain any hieroglyphs?\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Were these ushabtis inspired by the wooden model boats of the Middle Kingdom?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Why are all examples of these only dated to the 18th Dynasty, and why did they stop being made?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This is my personal photograph and original text.
