As part of my \u201cUshabti Friends\u201d series, I am teaching you how to look at the different characteristics of ushabtis \ud80c\udd71\ud80c\ude19\ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfed\ud80c\udc3e and how those characteristics can help you to narrow down the age\/time period that the ushabti \ud80c\udd71\ud80c\ude19\ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfed\ud80c\udc3e is from!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both of these ushabtis \ud80c\udd71\ud80c\ude19\ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfed\ud80c\udc3e that we are going to look at today \ud80c\udfc7\ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3 are from the Brooklyn Museum! Both of these ushabtis \ud80c\udd71\ud80c\ude19\ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfed\ud80c\udc3e are beautiful \ud80c\udd24\ud80c\udd91\ud80c\udc8b and unique and are dated to the same time period even though they look different and are made of different materials! In the first image, the ushabti \ud80c\udd71\ud80c\ude19\ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfed\ud80c\udc3e on the left is made of limestone \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\ude19\ud80c\udf09, while the painted ushabti \ud80c\udd71\ud80c\ude19\ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfed\ud80c\udc3e on the right is made of faience \ud80c\udee3\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udff8\ud80c\udffc. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both of these ushabtis are dated to the 18th Dynasty, but how do we know? Let\u2019s go through the process of narrowing down the age: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. In each hand, both of the ushabtis \ud80c\udd71\ud80c\ude19\ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfed\ud80c\udc3e are holding a hoe \ud80c\udf38 which is characteristic of ushabtis \ud80c\udd71\ud80c\ude19\ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfed\ud80c\udc3e that were made from the 18th Dynasty to the 25th Dynasty!\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. The real defining characteristic are the baskets that the ushabtis \ud80c\udd71\ud80c\ude19\ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfed\ud80c\udc3e are holding in each hand – this is only found on ushabtis \ud80c\udd71\ud80c\ude19\ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfed\ud80c\udc3e dated to the 18th Dynasty!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    If you see a ushabti \ud80c\udd71\ud80c\ude19\ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfed\ud80c\udc3e and it\u2019s holding a basket or a pot in each hand, it is an 18th Dynasty ushabti \ud80c\udd71\ud80c\ude19\ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfed\ud80c\udc3e! <\/p>\n\n\n\n
