This obelisk \ud80c\ude76 (and another, which now resides in London) was not commissioned by Cleopatra VII \ud80c\ude0e\ud80c\udced\ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udf6f\ud80c\udeaa\ud80c\udd3f\ud80c\udca7\ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udd3f\ud80c\udd87; in fact, it was commissioned by Thutmosis III \ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udfe0\ud80c\udda3 during his 18th Dynasty reign. The obelisks \ud80c\ude76 stood at the city of Heliopolis at one of Thutmosis III\u2019s \ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udfe0\ud80c\udda3 temples. The obelisk \ud80c\ude76 is made out of \u201cAswan \ud80c\udef4\ud80c\udcf9\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\udfcc\ud80c\udff2\ud80c\ude96 granite \ud80c\udd53\ud80c\udf33\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfb6\u201d which was the third most used rock \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\ude19 by the ancient Egyptians!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the obelisks were discovered by the Romans, they were moved from Heliopolis to Alexandria and placed at a temple \ud80c\ude5f\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude50 dedicated to Julius Caesar. The temple \ud80c\ude5f\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude50 was commissioned by Cleopatra VII \ud80c\ude0e\ud80c\udced\ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udf6f\ud80c\udeaa\ud80c\udd3f\ud80c\udca7\ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udd3f\ud80c\udd87, which is probably why the obelisks have the nickname \u201cCleopatra\u2019s Needle.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two obelisks were given by the Egyptian government as gifts; one is in London, and one is in Central Park in NYC! The obelisk is super close to the MET, so it\u2019s great to go and see before or after your museum trip! <\/p>\n\n\n\n
