Did you know that this sphinx \ud80c\udf9b\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udced\ud80c\udfe4 in the Louvre is one of the largest outside of Egypt \ud80c\udd8e\ud80c\udd53\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude96?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sphinx \ud80c\udf9b\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udced\ud80c\udfe4 is known as the \u201cGreat Sphinx of Tanis\u201d because it was found in the ruins of the Temple \ud80c\ude5f\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude50 of Amun-Ra \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfe0\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\udffa\ud80c\uddf3 in Tanis \ud80c\udd93\ud80c\udc9d\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude96! Tanis \ud80c\udd93\ud80c\udc9d\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude96 was the capital of Egypt \ud80c\udd8e\ud80c\udd53\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude96 from the 21st-23rd Dynasties. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sphinx \ud80c\udf9b\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udced\ud80c\udfe4 is made of red granite \ud80c\udd53\ud80c\udf33\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfb6 which is an extremely strong \ud80c\udd07\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udc9d\ud80c\udfed and durable rock \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\ude19! Red granite \ud80c\udd53\ud80c\udf33\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfb6 was very valued not only for its pink color but its durability. As you can see, the sphinx \ud80c\udf9b\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udced\ud80c\udfe4 retained its beautiful \ud80c\udd24 features really well due to the characteristics of the rock \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\ude19<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This sphinx \ud80c\udf9b\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udced\ud80c\udfe4 is so interesting because the cartouches of the pharaohs \ud80c\ude50\ud80c\ude7b\ud80c\udfe6 Merneptah \ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udcd2\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\ude18\ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udeb9 (19th Dynasty) and Sheshonq I \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfe0\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\udf3b\ud80c\uddb7\ud80c\uddb7\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\ude0e (22nd Dynasty) are both seen on the sphinx \ud80c\udf9b\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udced\ud80c\udfe4.  Why are two \ud80c\udffb pharaoh’s \ud80c\ude50\ud80c\ude7b names \ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\udfe6 there?  Well, the Egyptians \ud80c\udd8e\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udc00\ud80c\udc50\ud80c\udfea used to recycle monuments, a process called “usurping.” The practice of usurping was when the current pharaoh \ud80c\ude50\ud80c\ude7b would take old pharaoh’s \ud80c\ude50\ud80c\ude7b names \ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\udfe6 off of monuments \ud80c\udfe0\ud80c\udfcd and put their own there! It is basically ancient plagiarism and it occurred quite frequently. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some Egyptologists say this sphinx \ud80c\udf9b\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udced\ud80c\udfe4 actually dates back to the Old Kingdom, as the face \ud80c\udc76\ud80c\udffa doesn’t represent any known pharaoh \ud80c\ude50\ud80c\ude7b! A book that I have says the sphinx \ud80c\udf9b\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udced\ud80c\udfe4 dates to the Middle Kingdom. We will probably never know when the sphinx \ud80c\udf9b\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udced\ud80c\udfe4 was carved which is both fascinating and frustrating at the same time! <\/p>\n\n\n\n
