I have been so fortunate to see many different version of the Book of the Dead in various museums! While this is a simplified version of the scene, I still love it! This papyrus \ud80c\udd53\ud80c\udf51\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfdb is kinda hidden amongst many other papyri \ud80c\udd53\ud80c\udf51\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfdb\ud80c\udfe6 at the MET, and I\u2019ve definitely missed it during other visits!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anubis \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\udeaa\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udce3 is the center of the scene so of course it is my favorite! Here, Anubis \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\udeaa\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udc62 weighs the heart \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\udd23 of the deceased \ud80c\udd53\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udff1 against Maat\u2019s \ud80c\udf34\ud80d\udc19\ud80c\udca3\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udc66 feather. If Anubis \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\udeaa\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udce3 determines there\u2019s balance between the two \ud80c\udffb, then the deceased \ud80c\udd53\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udff1 would be presented to Osiris \ud80c\udc79\ud80c\udea8 \ud80c\udc2d by Horus \ud80c\udd43\ud80c\udc2d. The deceased \ud80c\udd53\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udff1 would then enter the Duat \ud80c\uddfc\ud80c\udd3f\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude50, or the afterlife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thoth \ud80c\udd64\ud80c\udc2d records the findings. While Thoth \ud80c\udd64\ud80c\udc2d is usually represented in his human body\/ibis \ud80c\ude54\ud80c\udcc0\ud80c\udd64 head form during this scene, that is not the case here! Thoth \ud80c\udd64\ud80c\udc2d is in his baboon form and is sitting on top of the scale! Ammit \ud80c\udc9d\ud80c\udd53\ud80c\udd53\ud80c\udfcf(the Devourer of the Dead\/Eater of Hearts) is also absent from this version! It\u2019s always so interesting to see different versions of the same scene!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the hieroglyphs \ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udf03\ud80c\udfea, it\u2019s interesting to see Osiris spelled like \u201c\ud80c\udea9\ud80c\udc79\u201d instead of the common form \u201c\ud80c\udc79\ud80c\udea8\ud80c\udc2d.\u201d For some reason I\u2019m always fascinated when I see alternate spellings; I don\u2019t know why!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the hieroglyphs \ud80c\udeb9\ud80c\udf03\ud80c\udfea, the phrase \u201c\ud80c\udea9\ud80c\udc79\ud80c\udf9f\ud80c\udf9b\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udf9b\u201d or \u201cOsiris, Lord of Eternity\u201d is written! We have learned all of those words through other posts!!
