This statue depicts Hatshepsut, a pharaoh of Egypt&#8217;s 18th Dynasty.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In Middle Egyptian the word for pharaoh \ud80c\ude50\ud80c\ude7b literally translates to \u201cGreat House. \u201c this is a direct reference to the palace where the pharaoh \ud80c\ude50\ud80c\ude7b resided during his\/her rule. The picture shows Hatshepsut \ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udc66\ud80c\udc93, my absolute favorite pharaoh \ud80c\ude50\ud80c\ude7b!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Here\u2019s what the hieroglyphs mean:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\ud80c\ude50 &#8211; House (pr)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\ud80c\ude7b &#8211; Great (\u02c13)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Let\u2019s break the hieroglyphs down further:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The \u201cschematic house plan \ud80c\ude50\u201c symbol is a biliteral phonogram for the sound \u201cpr,\u201d but it can also function as an ideogram for the word \u201chouse \ud80c\ude50\ud80c\udffa.\u201d This symbol is commonly used as a determinative for words that have to do with buildings (tomb \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udde9\ud80c\ude83\ud80c\ude50) or places (Duat \ud80c\uddfc\ud80c\udd3f\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude50).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The \u201cwooden column \ud80c\ude7b\u201d hieroglyph is a biliteral phonogram which represents the sound \u201c\u02c13.\u201d This symbol does have a variant, \ud80c\ude7c, which means the same, it\u2019s just oriented at a different angle! It is commonly used to represent the word \u201cGreat.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Fun Fact: the Roman Emperor Augustus used the word \u201cpharaoh\u201d as his cartouche instead of spelling out his name! Here is Augustus\u2019 cartouche: \ud80c\ude50\ud80c\ude7b\ud80c\udc00. This cartouche I have always found so fascinating because it is literally the word for pharaoh \ud80c\ude50\ud80c\ude7b in Middle Egyptian plus the determinative sign \ud80c\udc00.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This is my personal photograph and original text.
