Actually though, the \u201csister piece\u201d to this one is actually in the MET!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This piece of limestone \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\ude19\ud80c\udf09 (dated c. 1353\u20131336 B.C.E.) is what is known as a \u201ctrial piece\u201d &#8211; basically it was practice for the artist\/sculptor before they made the real thing! This was found in the sculptor\u2019s workshop at Amarna (in the southern \ud80c\uddd4\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udfcf part of the city). While Tell el-Amarna is the modem name for the area, Akhenaten \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udd5c\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\ude16 named his new capital \u201cAkhetaton\u201d or \u201cHorizon of the Aten\u201d &#8211; the capital of Egypt \ud80c\udd8e\ud80c\udd53\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude96 was originally Thebes \ud80c\udf00\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude96 before the big move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Petrie spent a lot of time excavating that part of the city during his time there from 1891-1892. Most of what we initially learned about the city and it\u2019s architecture came from Petrie\u2019s excavations. Fun Fact: Howard Carter assisted Petrie on these digs!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The piece unmistakably depicts Akhenaten \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udd5c\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\ude16. It is very easy to tell when Akhenaten \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udd5c\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\ude16 is being shown because of his very distinct facial features (pointed chin, long neck\/face). It would also make sense that most of the artwork that was found at the sculptors workshop in his capital would contain art that depicted him, Nefertiti \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\uddcd\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfed, the royal family, and the Aten \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are so many cool pieces in the Petrie Museum &#8211; while the pieces may not be as big or grand as the ones in the MET, Louvre, or British Museums, they are significant because they give a glimpse into the more subtle greatnesses in Egyptian society.
