“The Two Lands are in a Festival of Light” at the MET<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

I absolutely love this piece and I have been very excited to write about it! The relief that I am highlighting is part of a larger display at the MET called \u201cThe Two Lands are in a Festival of Light,\u201d and they were originally from the palace \ud80c\uddd3\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\ude50\ud80c\udffa walls at Amarna \ud80c\ude0c\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude50\ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\ude96. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Akhenaten \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udd5c\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\ude16 is my second favorite pharaoh \ud80c\ude50\ud80c\ude7b (Hatshepsut\u00a0\ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfe0\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\udfb9\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udd02\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udc3c\ud80c\udfea is obviously my first favorite) and I love to see statues, reliefs, or anything from the Amarna \ud80c\ude0c\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude50\ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\ude96 Period! I find everything to do with Akhenaten \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udd5c\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\ude16 so interesting because he was the \u201ctroublemaker\u201d pharaoh \ud80c\ude50\ud80c\ude7b who completely changed everything about the Egyptian religion (polytheistic to monotheistic), moved the capital to Amarna \ud80c\ude0c\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude50\ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\ude96, and generally was very much disliked by the Egyptian people \ud80c\udd8e\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udc00\ud80c\udc50\ud80c\udfea.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On this relief, we can see a large boat \ud80c\udca7\ud80c\udeaa\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude9e on the Nile \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udc8b\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\ude17\ud80c\ude18\ud80c\ude07\ud80c\udffa. At the front of the boat is a central structure that houses Akhenaten \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udd5c\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\ude16, Nefertiti \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\uddcd\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfed and one of the princesses (who is very small and difficult to see). Akhenaten \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udd5c\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\ude16 can be seen striking down an enemy. The Aten \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3 is shining above Akhenaten \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udd5c\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\ude16 and sending light rays down to him.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since these were on the palace \ud80c\uddd3\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\ude50\ud80c\udffa walls, it makes sense that Akhenaten \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udd5c\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\ude16 would want himself portrayed as very strong and striking down enemies. Akhenaten \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udd5c\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\ude16 is usually always depicted with his family \ud80c\udd55\ud80c\ude54\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udc00\ud80c\udc50\ud80c\udfe6, so enemy smiting was clearly a royal family \ud80c\udd55\ud80c\ude54\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udc00\ud80c\udc50\ud80c\udfe6 affair! The depiction of the royal family \ud80c\udd55\ud80c\ude54\ud80c\udd71\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udc00\ud80c\udc50\ud80c\udfe6 from this time period is fascinating because usually pharaohs \ud80c\ude50\ud80c\ude7b\ud80c\udfe6 were depicted alone, however in reliefs, Akhenaten \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udd5c\ud80d\udc0d\ud80c\ude16, Nefertiti \ud80c\uddcb\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\ude16\ud80c\uddf3\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\udd24\ud80c\uddcd\ud80c\udfcf\ud80c\udfed, and the princesses are always shown together \ud80c\ude16\ud80c\ude97.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
