Horus 𓅃

Let’s read some hieroglyphs 𓊹𓌃𓏪! Today 𓏇𓇋𓈖𓇳 we are going to be looking at the name of the Egyptian god “Horus 𓅃.” 

Horus 𓅃𓀭 was one of the most important gods 𓊹𓊹𓊹 in the Egyptian pantheon. Horus 𓅃𓀭 was the mythological representation of the pharaoh 𓉐𓉻/heir to the throne of Egypt 𓆎𓅓𓏏𓊖. He is usually represented as a human body with a falcon head, or as just a falcon which is why his name is written this way in hieroglyphs! 

Let’s take a closer look at the name:

𓅃 – ḥrw (pronounced like “heru”)

𓀭 – determinative (not pronounced) 

Let’s break down the symbols: 

The “Falcon 𓅃” symbol is an ideogram for the sound “ḥrw” which is Horus! 

The“seated god 𓀭” symbol is one that is not pronounced! This is a determinative symbol, which means that it is a symbol used to show the general meaning of the word! It is basically used as punctuation at the end of the word. While it is not pictured in the inscription I chose to highlight, it is super common to see which is why I am including it here!
