Son of Ra 𓅭𓇳

Let’s read some hieroglyphs 𓊹𓌃𓏪! Today 𓏇𓇋𓈖𓇳 we are going to be looking at the phrase “𓅭𓇳.”

“Son of Ra 𓅭𓇳” is a very common title that is usually seen before a cartouche (the oval that houses the name of a Pharaoh 𓉐𓉻) in hieroglyphic inscriptions. The phrase “Son of Ra 𓅭𓇳“ also implies that the pharaoh 𓉐𓉻 is the child of a god 𓊹, which would give them the divine right to rule. The pharaoh 𓉐𓉻 was considered to be a god 𓊹 on Earth 𓇾𓇾!

Let’s break down the phrase:

𓅭 – Son (z3)

𓇳 – Ra (rˁ) 

Let’s break down the symbols:  

The “duck 𓅭” is biliteral phonogram and is thought to have the sound of “z3” (like “zae”).

The “sun disc 𓇳” symbol serves many functions and is a very common symbol to see in hieroglyphic inscriptions. It is a determinative for words that involve the sun, day, and time. It is also an ideogram for the words day, sun, and the name of the god Ra. Depending on its use it will have different phonographic designations, with the most common being rˁ (ra).
