This is a fragment of what used to be a limestone ๐๐๐๐ statue ๐๐ ฑ๐๐พ of the pharaoh Akhenaten ๐๐๐๐ณ๐ ๐๐! This (and many others like it) were found during Flinders Petrie and Howard Carterโs excavation at present-day Amarna in 1891, which in ancient times was called Akhetaten ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐. Akhetaten ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ was the capital of Egypt ๐๐ ๐๐ during the reign ๐พ๐๐ of Akhenaten ๐๐๐๐ณ๐ ๐๐.ย

Many of Akhenatenโs ๐๐๐๐ณ๐ ๐๐ statues ๐๐ ฑ๐๐พ๐ช not only have the faces destroyed, but are also in hundreds of pieces. This deliberate destruction of his statuary was an attempt to destroy his image ๐๐ ฑ๐ so he would be forgotten from history. Images/statues of a person, and the name ๐๐ of a person held immense power in ancient Egypt ๐๐ ๐๐ so if a name ๐๐ and image ๐๐ ฑ๐ was destroyed, its power was removed!ย

Why did Akhenatenโs ๐๐๐๐ณ๐ ๐๐ successors want his image ๐๐ ฑ๐ destroyed? Akhenaten ๐๐๐๐ณ๐ ๐๐ is infamous for completely changing the Egyptian pantheon from polytheistic worship of the traditional gods ๐น๐น๐น to the monotheistic worship of the Aten ๐๐๐๐ณ and people definitely did not like that! When Akhenatenโs ๐๐๐๐ณ๐ ๐๐ son, Tutankhamun ๐๐ ๐๐๐ ฑ๐๐น๐พ๐บ๐ became the pharaoh, he reinstated the old religion and moved the capital of Egypt ๐๐ ๐๐ back to Thebes ๐๐๐.
