Letโs read some hieroglyphs ๐น๐๐ช!
Today ๐๐๐๐ณ we are going to look at one of the birth name variants for the pharaoh ๐๐ป Akhenaten ๐๐๐๐ณ๐ ๐๐! Now, this is most definitely a variant, because this cartouche ๐ท definitely does not show the name ๐๐ that Akhenaten ๐๐๐๐ณ๐ ๐๐ was given when he was born! The pharaoh ๐๐ป Akhenaten ๐๐๐๐ณ๐ ๐๐ was actually born with the name ๐๐ Amenhotep IV ๐๐ ๐๐ต๐น๐พ๐ (Amun is Satisfied, God and Ruler of Thebes), and changed his name ๐๐ during year five ๐พ of his reign ๐พ๐๐.ย

Letโs take a closer look at Akhenatenโs ๐๐๐๐ณ๐ ๐๐ cartouche ๐ท! Above the cartouche is his title โLord of Appearances ๐๐๐ฅ.โ
๐๐๐๐ณ – Aten (pronounced โAtenโ)
๐ ๐- Spirit (pronounced like โahkโ)
๐ – Of (pronounced like โnโ)
This is where the name ๐๐ โAkhenatenโ come from and the name ๐๐ means โSpirit of the Aten.โ
The โreed ๐โ is a uniliteral phonogram for โฤฑอ,โ however it can also function as an ideogram for the word โreed ๐๐บ.โ
The โflat loaf of bread ๐โ is a uniliteral phonogram used to represent the sound โt.โ It also functions as the ideogram for the word โbread ๐๐บ.โ
The โripple of water ๐โ is also a uniliteral phonogram sign. The โ๐โ is associated with the sound of โn!โ
The โ๐ณ sun discโ symbol is an ideogram for โraโ or โre,โ but can also be a determinative in words such as sun ๐๐ ฑ๐ณ, today ๐๐๐๐ณ, and Aten ๐๐๐๐ณ.
The โcrested ibis ๐ โ symbol is a biliteral phonogram sign and is associated with the sound โah.โ It can also be an ideogram for โspirit.โ
The โplacenta or sieve ๐โ symbol is a uniliteral phonogram and is associated with the sound โแธซโ (similar to a โkโ). This symbol is actually considered โunclassifiedโ because Egyptologists actually donโt know what it exactly represents!
Something thatโs very special about this picture ๐๐ ฑ๐ is that my Nonno took it when we were at the Vatican Museum together ๐๐!
