Hapy 𓐑π“Šͺπ“‡Œ

Let’s read some hieroglyphs π“ŠΉπ“Œƒπ“ͺ! Today π“‡π“‡‹π“ˆ–π“‡³ we are going to be looking at the name of the Egyptian god β€œHapy 𓐑π“Šͺπ“‡Œ.”

Hapy

Hapy 𓐑π“Šͺπ“‡Œ was one of the Four Sons of Horus who had the heqd of a baboon and appeared mostly on Canopic Jars and in funerary inscriptions. Hapy π“Ž›π“‘π“Šͺπ“‡Œ was tasked with protecting π“…“π“‚π“Ž‘π“€œ the lungs π“Šƒπ“Œ΄π“„₯π“…±π“„Ί!

Hapy’s 𓐑π“Šͺπ“‡Œ name is very phonetic and uses many phonogram symbols to write it out! Let’s take a closer look at the name:

𓐑 – αΈ₯p

π“Šͺ – p

π“‡Œ – y

Let’s break down the symbols:

The β€œpart of a ship 𓐑” symbol is a biliteral phonogram for the sound β€œαΈ₯p.”

The β€œstool π“Šͺ” symbol is a uniliteral phonogram for the sound β€œp.” Here it is acting as a phonetic complement, which is emphasizing the β€œp” sound from β€œπ“‘ hp.”

The β€œdouble reed π“‡Œβ€ symbol acts similarly to the β€œreed 𓇋.” When the symbol is doubled, it usually acts as a uniliteral phonogram with the sound of β€œy.”

Another very common way to write Hapy in hieroglyphs is β€œπ“Ž›π“Šͺπ“‘π“‡Œ.”
