Let’s read some hieroglyphs πΉππͺ!
Today ππππ³ we are going to be looking at a fragment of a relief that has some gorgeous π€ hieroglyphs πΉππͺ on it – the cartouches π πππ·π¦ of the pharaoh ππ» Akhenaten ππππ³π ππ!! This fragment is from present day Amarna, which during Akhenatenβs ππππ³π ππ rule was known as Akhetaten πππππππ. Akhetaten πππππππ translates to βHorizon of the Aten,β and Akhenaten ππππ³π ππ named it the capital of Egypt ππ ππ during year five πΎ of his reign.Β

This relief is probably from after year five πΎ of his reign, just based off of the throne name variant that is used in the hieroglyphs πΉππͺ!
Letβs start from the top row of hieroglyphs πΉππͺ! We will start reading from the right since that is where the snake points to! This is a very popular phrase that you may recognize: πππΉ. This translates to βGiven π Eternal π Life πΉ.β
Under that, we are also going to start reading from the right since that is where the directional symbols point to!
π₯ – King of Upper and Lower Egypt
πΉ – Life
π – On
π§ – Maat (Truth)
ππΏπΏ – Lord of the Two Lands
π³π€π£π³π¦π‘π- Neferkheperura-waenre which means “Beautiful are the Forms/Manifestations of Re, the Unique one of Re” (Akhenatenβs throne name)
On to the next set of hieroglyphs πΉππͺ!
π π³ – Son of Ra
πΉ – Life
π – On
π§ – Maat (Truth)
ππππ³π ππ – Akhenaten (the βbirth nameβ variant, since Akhenatenβs actual birth name was Amenhotep (IV))
πππ₯ – Lord of Appearances
What always gets me is Akhenatenβs throne name of π³π€π£π³π¦π‘π- Neferkheperura-waenre. This particular spelling of the throne name is only seen after he changed his given name from Amenhotep IV ππ ππ΅πΉπΎπ to Akhenaten ππππ³π ππ. The original spelling, before the name ππ change was βππ€π£π¦π³π‘π.β The name ππ is still pronounced the same and has the same meaning, but the falcon glyph π was changed to just the sun disc π³ (both pronounced Re/Ra). Also, all of Akhenatenβs other names (Horus name, etc) underwent a change, to remove the other deities πΉπΉπΉ, but this one didnβt.
I wonder why Akhenaten didnβt change the throne name (π³π€π£π³π¦π‘π) to represent the Aten ππππ³, just like how all of his other names πππ¦ were changed. He also kept the title βSon of Ra π π³,β instead of changing it to an Aten-based title. There are probably some mysteries that we will never fully comprehend about this time period!
