Letβs read some hieroglyphs πΉππͺ!
Today ππππ³ we are going to look at this fragmented relief from the Louvre which depicts the pharaoh ππ» Rameses II π³ππ§π³ππ and the god πΉ Horus π π! Horus is holding Rameses IIβs π³ππ§π³ππ hand and leading him. How do we know that this is a depiction of Horus π π since there are many falcon gods πΉπΉπΉ? The word “Edfu ππ§ππ” in the hieroglyphs πΉππͺ is a major clue – Horus π π of the Winged Disc or βBehdetiteβ was the chief god πΉ of the city π!
Look at who is leading Horus π π- itβs the god πΉ Wepwawet πππ₯ππ§ who is the βOpener of the Ways!β Wepwawet πππ₯ππ§ appears on a standard and is associated leading ritual processions.Β

Above the depiction is actually part of Rameses IIβs royal titularly! Each pharaoh ππ» had five names, and the first one that appears is known as the βHorus Name.β Rameses II had many variants of his Horus Name, but we will look at the one that appears here: βπ‘ππ§πΊ Strong Bull, Beloved of Maatβ
π‘ – Strong
π – Bull
π§ – Maat
πΊ – Beloved
After that, the Nebty Name π is listed! The Nebty Name is distinguished by the Nebty or Two Ladies symbol βπ .β Only the partial name appears on the relief: βπ π‘πππ Protector of Egypt.β
π – Protector
π‘πππ – Egypt (Kemet) (most commonly, Kemet is written as βππ ππ,β however this is another variant).
The full name is as follows: π π‘ππππ ±πππ²π‘πππ¦ βProtector of Egypt Who Curbs Foreign Lands.βΒ

Above Horus π π appears:Β
ππ§ππ – Edfu
π- Lord
π― – Sky
π€ – Perfect
πΉ – God
π³ππ§π³ππ – Usermaatre setep en Ra (Throne Name of Rameses II which translates to βThe Justice of Ra is powerful, Chosen of Ra.β)
π – Given
πΉ – Life
π – Strength
All together the inscription says: “Edfu, Lord of the Sky, the Perfect God Usermaatre setep en Ra Give Life and Strength.”
To the left of Rameses II:
πΉππ – It Is
π€ – Perfect
πΉ – God
π³ππ§π³ππ – Usermaatre setep en Ra
All together the inscription says: “It Is the Pefect God Usermaatre setep en Ra.”
