Montuhotep II’s Throne Name – Nebhapetra

Letโ€™s read some Hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช! Today we are going to be looking at the throne name cartouche ๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ™๐“ท for the Middle Kingdom pharaoh Montuhotep II! While Montuhotep ๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ฟ๐“…ฑ๐“Šต๐“๐“Šช is his birth name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ–, the cartouche ๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ™๐“ท we are looking at in the picture ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“ is his throne name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ–, which is โ€œNebhapetra ๐“‡ณ๐“ŽŸ๐“Šค.โ€

Nebhapetra
The throne name cartouche of Montuhotep II which reads “Nebhapetra”

Letโ€™s look even closer at the individual glyphs!
๐“‡ณ – Ra
๐“ŽŸ – โ€œNebโ€ (nb)
๐“Šค – โ€œHapetโ€ (แธซrw or แธฅjpt)

The โ€œ๐“‡ณ sun discโ€ symbol is an ideogram for โ€œraโ€ or โ€œre,โ€ but can also be a determinative in words such as sun ๐“†„๐“…ฑ๐“‡ณ, today ๐“‡๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ, and for words associated with time. The single symbol alone (like in cartouches) would be pronounced like โ€œraโ€ or โ€œre.โ€ Re is written first but pronounced last due to โ€œhonorific transpositionโ€ – the name of the god is written first out of respect.

The โ€œ๐“Ž  basketโ€ is a biliteral phonogram symbol that has the sound of โ€œnb,โ€ which is inferred to be pronounced like โ€œneb.โ€ The ๐“ŽŸ alone can also mean the common words โ€œLord,โ€ โ€œPossessor,โ€ and โ€œAll.โ€

The โ€œoar ๐“Šคโ€ symbol is a triliteral phonogram or an ideogram. As a triliteral it represents the sound โ€œแธซrw,โ€ and as an ideogram for โ€œoarโ€ it represents the sound โ€œแธฅjptโ€ which is the sound used in this case!

So all ๐“ŽŸ together his name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– means โ€œPossessor of the Oar of Ra.โ€
๐“‡ณ – Ra
๐“ŽŸ – Possessor
๐“Šค – Oar

This raised relief is originally from Montuhotep IIโ€™s ๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ฟ๐“…ฑ๐“Šต๐“๐“Šช mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahri. This relief was part of one of the main areas of the temple ๐“‰Ÿ๐“๐“‰ that was added at the end of Montuhotepโ€™s ๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ฟ๐“…ฑ๐“Šต๐“๐“Šช reign ๐“‹พ. This dates the relief to c. 2010โ€“2000 B.C.E. (Middle Kingdom, Dynasty 11).
