Letsβs read some hieroglyphs πΉππͺ! Today ππππ³ we are going to be reading the name ππ of the god πΉ βKhepri π£πππ.β
Khepri π£πππ, god πΉ of the rising sun π³πΊ and he symbolizes the βlife cycleβ – birth π, death π ππ±, and then rebirth ππΏπ ± in the afterlife πΌπΏππ. Khepri π£πππ is usually depicted as a winged scarab with a sun disc above him. Khepri π£πππ would carry the sun through the sky as it rose in the east!

Here are the two most common variants of Khepriβs name:
π£πππ
π£ππ
Letβs break down the symbols!
The βscarab beetle π£β is a phonogram sign. It is a triliteral sign, which means it represents three consonants. The βπ£β is associated with the sound βαΈ«prβ which could have been pronounced like βkheper.β The β scarab beetle π£β is also both an ideogram and determinative for the word βscarab beetle ππͺπππ£.β
The βmouth πβ symbol functions most commonly as a uniliteral phonogram and is used to represent the sound βr.β It can also be used as an ideogram for the word βmouth ππΊ.β
The βreed πβ is a uniliteral phonogram for βΔ±Ν,β however it can also function as an ideogram for the word βreed ππΊ.β
The βgod with sun disc πβ symbol in this case is acting as a determinative to show that Khepriβs name is that of a godβs associated with the sun. It can also be an ideogram for βRa.β
The βseated god πβ symbol is also a determinative but for βGodβ or βKing.β It is used in place of the common βπβ symbol.
The name β Khepri π£πππβ is pronounced pretty much the same as βscarab ππͺπππ£β even though they are written differently!
Khepri π£πππ is usually depicted in art like the picture in this post, but I have not seen his name ππ written too often in hieroglyphs πΉππͺ! However, his name ππ is still a good one to know since he is such a common deity to see depicted!
