Letβs read some hieroglyphs πΉππͺ! Today ππππ³ we are going to look at the common title “King of Upper and Lower Egypt π₯.”

π₯ can either be translated as βHe of the Sedge and the Beeβ or more simply βKing of Upper and Lower Egypt.β
π₯ is an extremely common title that is seen across many different types of monuments across Egypt ππ ππ and museums around the world. A title is a phrase that appears before a cartouche, which is the oval that encloses the name ππ of a pharaoh ππ».
Letβs take a closer look at each of the hieroglyphic symbols involved in this title:
The βsedge πβ is a biliteral phonogram and has the sound of βsw.β The symbol can also function as an ideogram for both the words βking (nswt)β and βsedge (swt).β The sedge π is also the symbol to represent Upper Egypt! Normally if you see the sedge π in an inscription, the word βkingβ is going to be involved!
The βflat loaf of bread πβ is a uniliteral phonogram used to represent the sound βtβ and can also be used to make words feminine when placed at the end of the word! It can also be used as a phonetic complement, meaning it will add emphasis to the sounds of the symbol that comes before it, which is its function in the title we are examining today (π₯)
The βbee π€β is an ideogram for the words bee, wasp, or honey and has the phonetic sound of βbjt.β More commonly, the bee π€ is the symbol that is used to represent Lower Egypt.
