Letβs read some hieroglyphs πΉππͺ! Today ππππ³ we are going to be looking at the name of the Egyptian god Sobek π΄ππ‘π .

Sobek π΄ππ‘π was one of the gods πΉπΉπΉ that was named in the Pyramid Texts, which makes him one of the oldest deities πΉπΉπΉ in the Egyptian pantheon.
Sobekβs π΄ππ‘π name is a great one to learn because it is very phonetic and is written with uniliteral phonograms (symbols that are associated with a single consonant) and a determinative (symbols that act like punctuation at the end of the word and are not pronounced)!
Letβs take a closer look at the name:
π΄ – s
π – b
π‘ – k
π – not pronounced (acts as the determinative)
Letβs break down the symbols!
The βfolded cloth π΄β symbol is a uniliteral phonogram for the sound βs.β
The βfoot πβ symbol is a uniliteral phonogram that represents the sound βb.β
The βBasket with a Handle π‘β symbol is a uniliteral phonogram for the sound of βk.β (Donβt confuse it with the βbasket π β symbol because they look so similar but have different meanings!)
The βCrocodile on shrine πβ symbol is primarily used as the determinative in the name βSobek π΄ππ‘πβ but can also be used as an ideogram for the same. When it is acting as an ideogram it has a sound of βsbk.β
