Letβs read some hieroglyphs πΉππͺ! Today ππππ³ we are going to be looking at the name of the Egyptian god Geb π ¬ππ.

Geb π ¬ππ is the god πΉ of the Earthβs πΎπΎ surface, which the ancient Egyptians called the Upper Earth. Anything that occurred on the Earthβs surface was thought to be caused by Geb π ¬ππ – earthquakes were caused by his laughter!
Here are the two most common ways to write Gebβs name ππ in hieroglyphs πΉππͺ:
π ¬ππ
π ¬π
Letβs take a closer look at the name:
π ¬ – gb
π – b
π – determinative symbol (not pronounced)
Letβs break down each of the symbols!
The βgoose π ¬β is a biliteral phonogram that represents the sound βgbβ which would have possibly been pronounced like βGeb.β It can also act as a determinative in certain cases.
The βfoot πβ symbol is a uniliteral phonogram that represents the sound βb.β Here, the βfoot πβ symbol is acting as a phonetic complement, meaning itβs emphasizing the βbβ sound from the previous symbol, and was not pronounced.
The βseated god πβ is a determinative symbol and isnβt pronounced! It acts as βpunctuationβ at the end of the name of a male god!
